I played a major role in design & development of the CAD drawings

for these projects as a Consultant working in my own office:

Cine Castle in Gilman Hot Springs, California

(for Golden Era Productions to create multimedia materials for the Church of Scientology) and

L. Ron Hubbard Residence in Gilman Hot Springs, California

Architect of Record - Robert E. Bell AIA Architect + Michael E. Robinson AIA Architect - A Joint Venture

CINE CASTLE

I started with a hand-drawn schematic floor plan and some hand-drawn building elevations and completed all CAD drawings required for construction drawings.  Most design sketches came to me via fax and email.  There were infrequent face-to-face meetings with architects of record but numerous telephonic conversations.  Overall design was inspired by Scottish Castles as requested by client.

BONNIE VIEW RESIDENCE FOR L. RON HUBBARD

I was given hand-drawn schematic floor plans and a 1/2" thick booklet of 11" by 17" sketches prepared by the interior design staff of Golden Era Productions (four samples shown below).   The booklet included rendered floor plans to indicate floor materials and rendered wall elevations to establish themes.  From the aforementioned input, I did all of the CAD drawings for construction documentation.  It should be noted that this is a one bedroom residence, built to accommodate the founder of the Church of Scientology, L. Ron Hubbard, upon his return (he had passed on).  Cost of the structure was around $16,000,000.  Non-Scientology people are not allowed near the building, hence no photographs; however, construction drawings deviated very little from these renderings.

I started with being in charge of School & Administration Buildings.  Along the way, the Sanctuary team was having difficulties and I took over and completed the Sanctuary.  Following that, i developed the free-standing Chapel building.  I completed all of my work in my own office except for weekly meetings in AVRP's downtown office with designers, consultants and others.  We had frequent communications via phone and fax.  (Partner in Charge, Randy Robbins used to kid me about working in my pink, fuzzy bunny slippers.)  i also did some jobsite coordination and other administrative duties while the campus was under construction.

The free-standing Chapel on the day of the Dedication Ceremony.  Gothic-arched stained glass windows were removed from previous building and reinstalled in the Chapel.  The Ark is between the two large windows.  Covering the Chapel is a Galvalum dome roof.  Similar but smaller domed roofs occur on other components of the complex as seen in the satellite photo above

My primary responsibility was development of building shell with elevators, stairs, shafts, cantilevered entrance canopy, etc.  The AVRP Interior Design Team developed the individual suites and I fitted them into the shell.  The public areas at ground level were developed by AVRP Architectural & Interior Design Professionals along with my participation.  I accomplished the major proportion of architectural sections and details.

This project was in the beginning of the Construction Document Phase when I became involved.  My contribution was developing building sections, building elevations and the detailing of the high canopy, stairs & guardrails throughout the facility and sunscreen trellises at main entry.  I also developed and coordinated the interior elevations of the classroom building with openings through the second floor corridor to allow natural light to penetrate to the first floor.
